Celebrity and Designer Handbag Auctioned at 6th Annual Hollywood Bag Ladies Luncheon Raises Over $300,000 for Lupus LA

November 7, 2008 — Kris Jenner of E!’s Keeping up with the Kardashians hosted the famous luncheon at the Four Season in Beverly Hills, which raised over $300,000 for lupus support services and innovative research across southern California and around the country.

In the spirit of encouraging charitable shopping, honorary event co-chair Toni Braxton (of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars) literally danced her way down the runway in front of 500 guests to showcase Lupus LA’s 2-carat diamond bracelet. Her twirling resulted in an $8,000 bid. A third of the more than $300,000 dollars raised came from winning handbag bids.

Carrie Brillstein also co-chaired the festive event attended by such celebrities and VIPs as Ali Hillis, Daisy Fuentes, Danielle Nicolet, Karina Smirnoff, Kelly Stone, Kris Jenner, Lily Collins, Lisa Ann Walter, Mischa Barton, and Shantel Van Santen.

Lupus LA honored motivational speaker, writer, and lecturer La-Doris McClaney, PhD, as its 2008 “Woman of Achievement.” Upon learning that a close friend was battling lupus, Dr. McClaney generously gave from her family’s charitable funds and also lent her name and efforts to Lupus LA to fight lupus.

The Bag Ladies Luncheon was preceded by its sister event, Hollywood Bag Ladies Day, a progressive shopping event on Rodeo Drive that raised over $140,000 for Lupus LA. On Bag Ladies Day, 10 percent of handbag sales at participating stores—Roberto Cavalli, Christian Dior, Fendi, Ferragamo, Jimmy Choo, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Stuart Weitzman, Valentino, Versace and Yves Saint Laurent, among others—are donated to support Lupus LA.
